Save the Cats on the University of Houston Campus

The Issue

Our petitions goal are to accept and allow students to care for and maintain relations with the many urban animals on the University of Houston Campus, particularly to allow the campus cats, squirrels, turtles, dogs, and other animals on campus that are being cared for by students to remain as a permanent part of campus. Our cats must stay. The removal of animals cared for by campus students and faculty destroys a critical part of student life, so those who sign this petition ask for our family of cats to stay on the University of Houston Central Campus.

Recently, the Campus Cat Fan Group, an upcoming student organization dedicated to caring for and improving the lives of strays on campus, received a warning that the 2 major campus cats, Lear and Momma, are going to be removed in 10 days by UH Risk Management for violating a new memorandum written by Renu Khator, our current chancellor. Momma and Lear were strays that move on to campus in 2017 after Harvey. During this time, professors and students began to socialize and care for these cats, paying for their vaccinations, building shelters, and feeding them daily. These 2 cats have been kept up to date with vaccinations and show no signs of aggressive behavior. Because of that, these cats have become an integral part of campus society, being there for students who needed emotional support, someone to talk to, or just generally brightening students and faculty's day. These cats are so vital to campus that they are mentioned by both orientation staff and by campus tour guides/ambassadors as part of our campus culture. And because of that they must stay on campus.

This memorandum and it's sudden and rapid enforcement against our cats jeopardizes the lives of all animals on our student campus. The lack of any exemptions for animals cared for by campus students, or for the protection of strays and other animals on campus that exhibit friendly behavior, leads to the campus having to enforce the removal of creatures on campus, something we cannot tolerate. We must be allowed to care for all creatures on campus so that those that can be adopted will, and those that cannot remain as ambassadors and support creatures to those on campus.

The actual policy we are fighting is here.
