Cancel all nonessential UB activities (including seminars, events and classes) until the surrounding area is removed from its status as a "state of emergency."

The Issue

A storm hitting Buffalo has left more than 100 cars stranded (more than half of them estimated to have people trapped inside) and a death count tallied up to 5 so far. Despite national attention, driving bans, and a state of emergency declared in surrounding areas, the university has refused to cancel classes. Students are advised to "use judgement", but the situation leaves many pressured to attempt to get to class - which is a violation of the law and personal safety.

In the interest of student (and faculty) safety, we petition that the University be closed until the surrounding areas are deemed safe for ordinary activities to resume.
