Companies doing full background checks & discriminating against potential employees due to crimes they've been convicted of that have no relation to their business or that were convicted of over a decade prior are forcing people that are trying to do better into bad situations. No company should have the right to run a background check for anything that's not directly related to the job the individual is being considered for. There also needs to be a mandatory limit that no company can look beyond. If a person has no criminal history in the past 7 years, then no company, whether government or private, should have the right to pull it up in regards to employment.
