Stop the Bill (HR.3084) that Denies Horses Helpful Medication before it's too late!
The Issue
Thirty years ago, state regulators took action to help racehorses avoid a condition known as EIPH which can cause bleeding and airway lesions. A helpful medication is given almost all horses in North America before they are allowed to race. This policy also ended the inhumane practice where some horse trainers withheld water from their horse starting midnight the day before they were to race.
Now, a handful of very affluent horse breeders who sell horses overseas and believe this policy is depressing prices want a federal bill to deny horses this and other treatments deemed essential by the veterinarians.
Because the rest of the world has not been as progressive as North America they want to outlaw this treatment and are trying to displace the current regulatory structure with an entity with no veterinarians on staff and no equine welfare experience.
To protect horses, these efforts must be stopped. We also think that some of the existing federal appropriation to develop drug policy in sport should be earmarked to help fund equine welfare research in horseracing.
The 110 members of the US Jockey Club are trying to ramrod this bill through and have hired top tier lobbyists and PR firms to do their bidding. Grassroots action is needed NOW. Please help by signing this petition.
