Ocean Climate Action

The Issue

It’s time for Members of Congress to join the young people of the United States, and fight for our oceans and coasts before it is too late.

The ocean is one of the biggest resources for mitigating the effects of climate change, absorbing 10.8 billion metric tons of industrial carbon dioxide every year. That’s almost a third of our global greenhouse gas emissions.

Young people want the United States Congress to act NOW during the budget reconciliation process.  We want Congress to focus on our most important ocean and coasts, by dedicating:

  • Ten billion dollars to coastal restoration and living shorelines. While 10 billion sounds like a lot, excessive storm damage has cost communities tens of billions of dollars to rebuild and could cost hundreds of billions in the future; barrier islands, salt marshes, coasts and living shorelines allow the seashore to continually adapt to changing ocean patterns and provide greater inland protection.
  • 20 billion dollars to decarbonize our ports. Ports are essential to our growing economy. However, our ports are heavily dependent on fossil fuels. We need a robust Ports Decarbonization Program so that we can electrify our nation's ports to make them green and efficient while reducing air pollution.
  • 10 billion dollars to establish a Civilian Climate Corps (CCC). This EPA administered program will put young people to work to create climate resilient communities. The CCC would create thousands of jobs and also address environmental justice through locally-led, science-based projects.

We want to have clean air, water, greenery for our generation and generations after us.

As a current or future or new voter, we call on ALL OUR elected officials to support these essential efforts.

HERE IS HOW YOU CAN HELP!

Step1: Sign our petition to pledge your support. Every signature counts!

Step 2: Let's create a social media wave and let them know that we care for our ports and ocean. Share this message on social media / Instagram and tweet to your elected representatives.

I support #Youth4OCaction #ProtectOurOcean. Do you @(tag your representatives in Congress)?
