The Issue

This petition is for Keeping Schools Closed in Mississippi due to COVID-19.

In Mississippi the cases and deaths are growing daily, and in late July/ early August, Mississippi students are returning back to school for the 2020-2021 school year. In Mississippi there are currently, over 70,000 cases and over 2,000 deaths.

"We're not going to use our children like guinea pigs..." New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says in an interview. Our children are not guinea pigs, they are living, breathing human beings.

"Last week, as Mississippi led the country in per capita deaths from the coronavirus, schools around the state began holding in-person classes in defiance of the state's own medical experts, who had pushed for a delayed start to the year... By the end of its first week, the Corinth School district had been forced to quarantine over 120 students and staff. Later that week, a longtime football coach at Lafayette High School died after quarantining with coronavirus symptoms. And on Monday, just as another group of school districts opened their doors, the state confirmed COVID cases in 22 schools. One day later, Gulfport High School sent 100 students to quarantine at home after a teacher there reported symptoms." Says The Daily Beast.

I personally think Mississippi should close their schools. If that many people are going to be quarantined.

"'What these numbers let me know is that we did it too soon. And it’s going to get worse,' said Erica Jones, president of the Mississippi Association of Educators, the biggest teacher’s union in the state. 'All it takes is one student to come in with the virus and ‘boom,’ the spread is there.” Also says The Daily Beast.

If you keep the schools open the cases will grow extremely and maybe out of control.
