Dear Supporters,

NHTSA has responded to our petition to modify FMVSS-108 to require that all vehicle headlamps emit spatially uniform light that disperses following an inverse square law. NHTSA states that they are now evaluating our petition.

Currently, LED headlights emit 100,000,000+ candela per square meter of peak luminance that has very little dispersion, causing eye pain, impaired vision, and distraction.  The purpose of this petition is to require the automakers to ensure that the light emitted by headlights does not smack us in the eyes with extremely dense visible radiation.  For us to be able to see, any artificial light needs to be gentle and dispersing so that the farther away one is from the source, the less bright it appears.

Our previous petitions to NHTSA have been unjustly rejected and were not even given a docket number for public comment.  This petition is still being evaluated by NHTSA and there is no guarantee that NHTSA will assign a docket number and allow public comments.

Sincerely,

Mark Baker
