Identifying Hidden Corn in Your Drugs

The Issue

Demand "Corn Allergy Warning" Directly on All Intravenous Solution Bags Containing Corn-Derived Ingredients, e.g., Dextrose (Corn Sugar), Sodium Citrate, etc., and Adopt Uniform Corn Allergy Contraindication Warnings on All Package Inserts

Intravenous solutions containing dextrose (corn sugar derived from cornstarch) are not consistently contraindicated for corn-allergic patients; and we continue to receive reports in our corn allergy support groups of 19K+ members that medical staff still insist upon administering dextrose IV fluids to corn-allergic patients (as well as other drugs containing corn-derived ingredients), even though the patient's allergy to corn is clearly documented in their medical records. After a physician told a corn-allergic patient that "No one can be allergic to dextrose," he proceeded to administer the dextrose IV fluid resulting in a severe allergic reaction requiring emergency intervention. As a result of this incident, and many other reported similar incidents, it took me three years to forward the package insert for Lactated Ringer’s and 5% Dextrose Injection, USP IV fluid from Baxter Laboratories to our nation's hospitals and colleges of medicine; however, many medical professionals remain oblivious to the dangers of dextrose (corn sugar derived from cornstarch) for corn-allergic patients.
