U.S. Congress: Oppose Any Illegal Annexation or Military Occupation of Greenland
The Issue
Petition to the United States Congress: Oppose Any Illegal Annexation or Military Occupation of Greenland by the United States of America
We, the undersigned residents and citizens of the United States, call upon the United States Congress to uphold international law, democratic principles, and the right of peoples to self-determination.
Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark, a NATO ally, whose political status is governed by international law. The acquisition of territory through coercion, force, or unilateral action violates the Charter of the United Nations and long-standing international norms.
Any attempt by the United States to annex Greenland or place it under military occupation without the free, prior, and informed consent of the people of Greenland would be unlawful, illegitimate, and contrary to core American values.
We therefore call on the United States Congress to:
- Publicly and unequivocally reject any attempt to annex Greenland by unlawful or coercive means;
- Affirm the right of the people of Greenland to determine their own political future without external pressure;
- Defend international law, democratic governance, and the rules-based international order;
- Exercise Congress’s constitutional authority to check unlawful executive action in foreign affairs
- Specifically, we demand that Congress formally declare that any attempted annexation or military occupation of Greenland carried out by the Trump administration—without the freely expressed consent of the people of Greenland—shall be recognized by Congress as null and void, having no legal force or legitimacy under U.S. or international law.
Such actions would damage U.S. credibility, destabilize international relations, and set a dangerous precedent that undermines global peace and security. Congress has both the authority and the responsibility to prevent this outcome.
By signing this petition, we urge our representatives to act decisively to oppose illegal annexation, reject military occupation, and reaffirm the United States’ commitment to self-determination, diplomacy, and the rule of law.
Signed,
Concerned citizens and residents of the United States
