Last night, the City of Denton, Texas, voted to grant Tyson Foods (the nation’s largest chicken producer) an incentives package for a new warehouse -- despite hearing powerful citizen testimony about the company’s dismal environmental, animal welfare, and workers’ rights records. Make sure Tyson is held accountable for its abusive practices by tweeting TODAY!
Last month, hundreds of you joined us in flooding the city with calls and emails urging it to deny Tyson its requested incentives package, and last night was the final vote.
Speaking on behalf of the quarter million of you who have signed our petition, local resident Aminat Abiola described the horrors documented by Compassion Over Killing’s back-to-back investigations of the poultry giant and then concluded, “If Denton cares about its citizens and the livelihood and freedom of animals, it should not use public money to support a company that treats its workers as scapegoats while turning billions in profits from extreme cruelty.”
Others spoke out against Tyson’s environmental and workers’ rights abuses, with one citizen asking, “What message are we sending when we give tax incentives to companies who have a history of taking advantage of blue-collar workers, minorities, and poor folk?”
In response, Tyson Public Relations Manager Derek Burleson weakly defended the company: "Are we a perfect company? Have we made mistakes? Sure. But we also believe in continuous improvement and about doing the right thing and rectifying mistakes, so ... it's tough for me to speak to individual allegations.”
Before the final vote, City Councilmember Deb Armintor stood with the concerned public, stating, “I look at what we're buying into, what we're investing in. So I have a real moral opposition to some of these practices ... that are well-documented.”
Ultimately, the city failed to hold Tyson accountable, voting 4-3 to grant the incentives package. But you can help ensure Tyson is truly “rectifying mistakes” by tweeting today! Click here or use our sample tweet below.
