More than a quarter million of you have signed our petition since our gut-wrenching investigation exposed egregious abuse and the devastating effects of rapid growth of birds in Tyson’s supply chain. And with your support, we’ve continued ruffling feathers at Tyson all year long: from flying an aerial banner over the company’s hometown to publishing an eye-opening letter in its local paper, plus circling a poultry industry summit with our mobile billboard.
In response, the poultry giant has taken some promising steps: increasing investment in cruelty-free plant protein maker Beyond Meat, and even announcing its own upcoming line of plant-based bowls. Former CEO Tom Hayes recently stated about vegan protein makers, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, right?”
Tyson is feeling the heat--and seeing that consumers are flocking from cruelty and toward compassionate, sustainable plant protein. According to Food Dive, the company’s Trendtellers Council just predicted that alternative proteins will be a major trend in 2019, with one Tyson rep stating that despite Tyson’s focus on meat, the company “also ha[s] to be able to feed the world.”
Yet Tyson has still failed to address a major source of suffering in the hundreds of millions of birds it breeds every year: These birds have been genetically manipulated to grow so unnaturally large, so quickly that they can suffer heart attacks and their fragile legs often collapse under their own morbidly obese bodies -- all before they’re even 2 months old!
