Over 63,000 people join the fight to #EndYikYakBullying

Hi Everyone! It has been another incredible few days here as the campaign has picked up speed and we’ve started to get some great news articles written about us! I’m so excited to see so many people join the cause, and I wanted to take a moment to talk with you about our goals for the campaign: Ideally, we would like to work with the creators of Yik Yak to implement stronger safety and anti-bullying policies that reflect their commitment to keeping their platform free of this kind of behavior. Social media has the power to be used for so much good, but right now Yik Yak is only doing harm. Up until now, Yik Yak has done nothing to ensure that bullying, harassment, hate speech, and threats of violence are handled quickly and effectively -- leaving it up to users to flag individual posts themselves. This is a way for them to pass off responsibility and pretend that there is nothing wrong, all while the problem gets worse and worse. We want Yik Yak to institute far stronger community standards and terms of service, which includes specific and concrete language about this type of content, and how they as a company will handle it. Users who post vicious bullying, hate speech, death threats, or threats of school violence should immediately have their accounts terminated, and this information should be stored and available to law enforcement should they require it for ongoing investigations. We would much rather work with Yik Yak to achieve these goals, but if they refuse or remain silent and allow this situation to continue, our focus will shift from making changes from within, to having the app shut down. Bullying is too big a problem, and we refuse to give in.
