Two days of menstrual leave each month

The Issue

Periods are a natural and important part of life for half the world's population, yet the pain and discomfort they cause often go overlooked in our society. Many women and people who menstruate face significant physical, emotional, and mental challenges during their menstrual cycle, which can affect their productivity and well-being.

Women experience menstrual cycles every month for a significant portion of their lives—cycles that exist to make pregnancy possible in the first place. Yet, while maternity leave is recognized, the physical and emotional challenges that occur monthly are not. Many women endure severe pain, fatigue, hormonal changes, and mood fluctuations during their periods, often pushing through work when rest is genuinely needed. It is only fair and humane that women be granted at least two days of menstrual leave each month, without question, to acknowledge this natural but often debilitating reality. Providing this leave is not only a matter of equity, but of basic respect for women’s health and well-being.

We call on governments, global organizations, and policymakers to come together and acknowledge the importance of these days by establishing a globally recognized holiday during which menstruating individuals can rest and recover. This initiative is not just about comfort; it is about recognizing a fundamental human need and promoting gender equality.
