Two Crosswalks: a "Path of Remembrance" On 6th Street, Between Royal Ave & Queen's Ave
The Issue
Note: I am not affiliated with the Royal Canadian Legion, The Royal Westminster Regiment, or an other entity.
*I got the idea for this proposal when I saw an article about similar projects in Ontario.
I am passionate about our veterans: those men and women from diverse cultures, who chalked up milestones for Canada's freedom. Personally, I believe that establishing a dedicated area of (two) Remembrance Street Crossings for our heroes at the intersections of 6th Street and Royal Avenue, and 6th Street and Queen's Avenue, in New Westminster is a lasting tribute.
This area is special: every Remembrance Day, soldiers of the Royal Westminster Regiment, both past & present, along with members of the New Westminster Police & Fire Departments, the Royal Canadian Legion, & young people, who are in the Army, Navy & Air Force Cadets, march to the New Westminster Cenotaph for the Remembrance Day ceremony. Once the ceremony is over, the march resumes, to the Royal Westminster Regiment, where the participants finish their participation. Others are included in this very inclusive march, which reflects the citizens who make up New Westminster.
This small, yet significant gesture will remind every passer-by of the valiant service and sacrifices our veterans have made.
Aside from the Royal Westminster Regiment's active participation in World Wars 1& 2, the Korean War, United Nations Peacekeeping & humanitarian operations, & most recently, the war in Afghanistan, there is this: Canada's military history is marked by more than 118,000 men and women who have laid down their lives in service (Veterans Affairs Canada, 2021), and many more have protected us both at home and on foreign soil.
Every street corner, every public place, echoes gratitude and respect towards our armed forces, past and present.
A permanent recognition like a Remembrance Street Crossing will add another layer to this tribute, creating an enduring legacy.
This doesn't glorify war, it celebrates people who served & made sacrifices on behalf of our city, our province, & our country.
Join me in urging the New Westminster city council to implement this Remembrance Street Crossing. This move is symbolic of our continued respect for our veterans and a daily reminder of their heroic deeds. Sign the petition and let's honour our Canadian Veterans together.
