Flu Season and Coronavirus At Tustin United School District

Good Afternoon!

Several of you have reached out to inquire what steps Tustin United School District is taking to proactively address an active flu season as well as the fact that the coronavirus has now reached Orange County.

We reached out to several members of Tustin City Council to inquire with the school district. We're pleased to state that Tustin City Council has been cooperative in pushing the school district on this issue.

Unfortunately, what we received as parents was a copy and pasted email that Tustin United School District copied from Irvine United School District. In it, there were no proactive steps that the district was taking to help to minimize the spread of the flu and any potential steps the district was taking pertaining to coronavirus.

Information on coronavirus continues to evolve and our intent isn't to cause any panic or to encourage parents to pull their kids out of school. What we do know is that we're in the middle of flu season, the coronavirus has reached Orange County and that according to the Chinese government it can be spread without an individual necessarily showing symptoms.

What we've attempted to do is to encourage Tustin United School District to take a more proactive approach in encouraging hand washing, cleaning commonly touched items and educating principals, teachers, and students about basic ways in which to minimize the spread of diseases.

So far the district has been hesitant to look into any proactive measures. The school board, in particular, is comprised mostly of members that don't have children attending Tustin schools. We'd like to encourage parents to call the district at: 714-730-7301 or to email the school superintendent Dr. Franklin at: gfranklin@tustin.k12.ca.us.

Let them know that you want see to the district be proactive in addressing an active flu season as well as coronavirus. While we can't guarantee that it won't come to Tustin schools, we as parents can take measures to try to minimize the impact.

Thank you as always!
