Turn the Wichita Old Public Library into a homeless shelter/resource center
The Issue
A few words from local activists
"So many people are turned away from the shelters we currently have due to things that the homeless population simply cannot control or fix on their own even if they absolutely wanted to (and a lot of them do want to). We have elderly folks being denied access to shelters due to urinary incontinence, mentally ill being denied access so others are more comfortable, people with physical injuries and conditions that may be unsightly or infected being denied for not being able to seek proper medical care. The only way this will improve is if we as a city and as a community offer resources like shower facilities, medical personnel, etc. Homelessness runs so much deeper than just not having a place to sleep at night."
"A homeless shelter where they are given the resources and communal power necessary to run the shelter by themselves. No bureaucratic bs that limits their empowerment until they check all the correct little boxes for help. Run it like a coop or collective.
You've successfully increased your homeless population each year by refusing to meet the needs of your community, so there are more people than can fit in our current shelters. You don't want em on the streets give em a place to be that's not jail then."
