Every year, as September 15th approaches, a sudden gloom descends upon our KIF football games. By law for the last decade, from mid September to mid December, Friday night lights are disallowed due to the nesting period of the protected Shearwater birds. This forces us to reschedule our games to the scorching noon hours on Saturdays. As global temperatures continue to rise, this situation has increasingly become a potential health risk for our children and spectators alike. Heat stroke instances have increased by more than 130% over the last 30 years in the US, according to a study published in the journal Environmental Research (2019).

I, and many others in this community, understand the importance of preserving wildlife, especially species like the Shearwater. However, we are also equally passionate about the safety of our children and our community's cherished KIF football games.

This petition seeks to evoke change in local legislation. We believe there should be a solution that offers coexistence between the protection of the Shearwater birds and our need for night football games during their nesting period.
