TRUMP: Stop Putting Immigrants in Ghettos

The Issue

President Trump has recently been placing undocumented immigrants in "tent cities", which are immigrant detention centers that are very reminiscent of the ghettos used to isolate Jews during the Holocaust. The camps are surrounded by barbed wire, forcing immigrants to remain inside, and patrolled by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, just as Holocaust ghettos were patrolled by Nazis.

Within these tent cities, immigrants and their children are forced to undergo horrific conditions. According to Rep. Nanette Barragán (D-CA), who visited a tent city located in El Paso, Texas, the conditions of the tent cities are disgusting and unhealthy. In an interview with the Daily Beast, Barragán stated "The situation is unhealthy. People are in a confined space, they're not getting showers, their clothes are dirty, babies are not getting Pampers like they should be. These ladies were crying and telling us their stories and it was just heartbreaking." Barragán reported tents with no cots or other sleeping arrangements, with babies as young as four months old sleeping on the concrete floors of the tents. Residents of the tent cities are supposed to be offered a shower every day, but one immigrant stated she had been detained for five days without one. The tents are so cramped that you have to step over people just to walk around. The smell is also unhealthy. Barragán claimed it made her nauseous after just five minutes of being in the tent city.

Trump and his administration are refusing to let journalists report on these cities, which is most likely why it has not made national news. This is a violation of the first amendment, but we will not be silenced. I am fourteen years old, and even I can recognize how horrendous and inhumane this situation is. We as a country need to unite to stand against these conditions and make sure history doesn't repeat itself with a second Holocaust. If you care about these people and the hardships they are currently facing, please sign my petitions. We need to be the voice for the people who can't currently speak. The lives of these people are in our hands.
