Mi nombre es Melany, soy una costarricense indignada por la condena a 12 años de prisión de Mauricio Steller, un guardaparques padre de 5 hijos que en defensa propia hirió a un ladrón de tortugas.

Mauricio en cumplimiento de su deber infortunadamente hirió de bala, la noche del 22 de septiembre de 2009, a uno de los ladrones de huevos de tortuga que lo atacaron a él y a su compañero a machetazos cuando ellos como guardaparques los encontraron cometiendo un delito.

Ahora en una situación insolita, Mauricio se enfrenta a más de una década de prisión por hacer su trabajo y defender el patrimonio ecológico de Costa Rica. Los tribunales de justicia deben velar por proteger a los ambientalistas, guardaparques y demás defensores de la naturaleza que arriesgan su vida todos los días.

Es el momento de unirnos firmando y compartiendo esta petición para que que se libere de la condena a Mauricio y que el Gobierno se comprometa a proteger a quienes defienden los recursos naturales de Costa Rica.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Mauricio Steller, park ranger, 32 and father of 5 children can spend more than a decade in prison for doing his job and protect the ecological heritage of our country. The turtles are on the IUCN Red List of endangered species.

Nature is our future, the legacy to our children and we must be consistent with our laws. The courts should ensure protection of environmentalists, rangers and other defenders of nature who risk their lives every day.

Mauricio has been sentenced to 12 years in prison when, in the line of duty, he shot and wounded on the night of September 22, 2009, one of the thieves of turtle eggs that attacked him and his companion with machetes when found committing the crime.

It is time to unite and ask Authorities to release Mauricio from the condemnation. The Government needs to protect those who defend the natural resources of Costa Rica. Or are we going to allow our children's heritage to be destroyed?
