Nous, citoyen(e)s désireux d'un changement de paradigme dans notre rapport aux animaux sauvages, soutenons la reprise du zoo de Pont-Scorff par Sea Shepherd France. Saisissons l’opportunité de transformer ce lieu en centre de soins et de réhabilitation d’animaux sauvages et en plateforme d’échanges et d’enrichissements écologiques et culturels.  Nous consentons, si Sea Shepherd France devait l’emporter au Tribunal le 18 mai prochain à faire un don mensuel de 6 euros pour contribuer aux soins et à l’entretien des plus de 300 animaux présents sur le site et ceux à venir.

En décembre 2019, Sea Shepherd France et d'autres soutiens ont mobilisé leurs réseaux respectifs pour aider l’association Rewild à racheter le Zoo de Pont-Scorff. Une cagnotte très médiatisée avait permis de mobiliser 26 000 donateurs issus de 62 pays et de collecter environ 700 000 euros en quelques jours.

L’objectif était clair : permettre à l’association Rewild de racheter la Sarl Bretagne Zoo afin de faire bénéficier les animaux éligibles au relâché en milieu naturel d’un programme de réhabilitation à la vie sauvage. Les animaux non relâchables dans le milieu naturel pour des raisons génétiques, sanitaires ou comportementales étaient destinés à être sanctuarisés dans de grands espaces clos sous leurs latitudes d’origine.

L’argent de la cagnotte a permis dans un premier temps de faire fonctionner le site fermé au public (et donc sans aucune activité commerciale) mais cela n’a pas suffi. Au bout de quelques mois, les fonds sont venus à manquer. 

Sea Shepherd France et ses mécènes ont alors soutenu pendant plusieurs mois l’association Rewild, afin de subvenir en urgence aux besoins des animaux du site. Mais sans aucune visibilité et sans aucun pouvoir de décision sur la gestion de la Sarl Bretagne Zoo, Sea Shepherd France a été contrainte de stopper son soutien.

Le bilan au bout d’une année 2020 difficile plombée par la pandémie Covid a abouti en mars dernier à la mise en liquidation de la Sarl Bretagne Zoo par le Tribunal de Commerce de Lorient, laissant les animaux face à un sort incertain.

La question s’est posée pour Sea Shepherd France de se détourner du projet et de laisser des repreneurs de zoos classiques reprendre la main sur les animaux et sur le site.  Mais les avancées réalisées pendant cette année- notamment grâce à l’incroyable travail de la coordinatrice « Réserves et sanctuaires » et le réseau de partenaires internationaux qui attendent d’accueillir les animaux du site justifient qu’une autre chance soit donnée à ce projet. La quasi-totalité des animaux africains bénéficie à ce jour d’une place qui les attend en sanctuaire en Afrique, pour certains en milieu naturel. Plusieurs autres animaux (rapaces, oiseaux, reptiles…) sont aujourd’hui en possibilité de rejoindre des programmes scientifiques de renforcement de population en milieu naturel.

Le site de l’ancien zoo est également idéal pour constituer le premier centre de soins pour animaux marins de Sea Shepherd au monde (phoques, oiseaux marins, tortues…). Pour ce projet, Sea Shepherd s’est entouré de professionnels du soin aux animaux sauvages marins et terrestres (vétérinaires, capacitaires) et de scientifiques travaillant à des programmes de renforcement de populations sauvages sur les cinq continents.

Le fonctionnement du site (alimentation et soins des animaux, factures diverses, assurances et salaires des soigneurs…) s’élève à un coût mensuel de 60 000 euros. Si 10 000 personnes font un don de 6 euros par mois, les frais de fonctionnement sont assurés. En soutien, Sea Shepherd est en mesure de mobiliser un réseau international de centaines de bénévoles qualifiés dans des domaines aussi divers que les soins vétérinaires, la recherche scientifique, la construction, la maçonnerie, le chauffage, la cuisine, la communication…  

Une partie du site sera ouverte au public (sans exposition directe des animaux) au sein de laquelle seront installés dès Noël prochain la première boutique physique de produits dérivés en France, un restaurant/bar végan avec les différents Chef(fe)s de Sea Shepherd, des ateliers de cuisine végétale, mais aussi des ateliers pédagogiques pour les enfants au travers du programme « Sea Shepherd Kids », des stages de maraîchage bio, des expositions, des conférences et des projections à thème comme Sea Shepherd en organise des dizaines chaque année partout dans le monde avec des experts et des invités internationaux.

Le Tribunal de Commerce de Lorient auditionnera les différents candidats à la reprise le 18 mai prochain et des zoos classiques sont sur les rangs. Par la présente, nous souhaitons démontrer au Tribunal qu’une partie croissante du grand public désire un autre rapport au monde sauvage.

Pont-Scorff Zoo: Let’s gather 10,000 people to support Sea Shepherd France takeover project. 

We, who do not want to let this essential project sink with Bretagne Zoo Ldt., support the takeover of the Pont-Scorff site by Sea Shepherd France. Let us seize the opportunity to transform this former zoo into a care and rehabilitation center for captive wild animals and a platform for ecological and cultural exchange.  We agree, should Sea Shepherd France prevail in court on May 18, to make a €6 monthly donation to contribute to the care and maintenance of the more than 300 animals on the site and those to come.

In December 2019, Sea Shepherd France, along with other supporters, mobilized their respective networks to help the Rewild NGO to purchase Pont-Scorff Zoo. A highly publicized fundraiser mobilized 26,000 donors from 62 countries, collecting about €700,000 in a few days.

The goal was clear: to have the NGO Rewild buy Bretagne Zoo Ltd. in order to give the animals eligible for release to the wild a chance to benefit from a wildlife rehabilitation program. The animals that could not be released into the wild for genetic, sanitary or behavioral reasons were destined to be cared for in sanctuaries, in large enclosed spaces under their native latitudes.

The money raised initially made it possible to close the site to the public (and therefore, without any commercial activity) but this was not enough. After a few months, the funds ran out. 

Sea Shepherd France and its sponsors then supported the Rewild association for several months, in order to meet the urgent needs of the animals on site. But with no visibility and no decision-making power over the management of Bretagne Zoo Ltd., Sea Shepherd France was forced to halt its support.

2020 has been a difficult year, plagued by the Covid pandemic, and led to the liquidation of Bretagne Zoo Ltd. by the Commercial Court of Lorient last March, leaving the animals to face an uncertain fate.

The question arose for Sea Shepherd France to turn away from the project and to let classic zoo owners take over the animals and the site.  But the progress made during this year - notably thanks to the incredible work of the "Reserves and Sanctuaries" coordinator - and the network of international partners waiting to welcome the animals on their site, justify giving this project another chance. Almost all African animals have a place waiting for them in a sanctuary in Africa, some would even be able to return to the wild. Several other animals (birds of prey, reptiles...) have the possibility to join scientific programs of reinforcement of population in their natural environment.

The site of the former zoo is also ideal to build Sea Shepherd's first marine animal care center in the world (seals, seabirds, turtles, etc.). For this project, Sea Shepherd has surrounded itself with professionals in the field of marine and terrestrial wildlife care (veterinarians, qualified wildlife specialists) and scientists working on programs to strengthen wild populations on five continents.

The cost of operating the site (feeding and caring for the animals, various bills, insurance and salaries of the keepers...) amounts to a monthly cost of €60,000. If 10,000 people commit to a €6 monthly donation, the operating costs are assured. In support, Sea Shepherd is able to mobilize an international network of hundreds of qualified volunteers in fields as diverse as veterinary care, scientific research, construction, masonry, heating, cooking, communication...  

Part of the site will be open to the public (without direct exposure of the animals) and will include the very first physical Sea Shepherd store in France, a vegan restaurant/bar with the various Sea Shepherd chefs, plant-based cooking workshops, but also educational workshops for children through the "Sea Shepherd Kids" program, organic market gardening courses, exhibitions, conferences and themed screenings just like the ones Sea Shepherd organizes each year all over the world with international experts and guests.
