Travel Chaos Around Exeter Motorway Services

The Issue

Living in Exeter, I've witnessed firsthand the chaos and frustration caused by the current traffic situation at the motorway services. The congestion on the motorway exit and surrounding roads, especially because vehicles are in yellow boxed areas, or blocking free flowing traffic around the Sandy Gate roundabout which disrupts daily travel, adding unnecessary travel time and stress to thousands of locals and visitors alike.

Exeter motorway services, a crucial stop for many travelers, is experiencing a severe issue with traffic management. The existing infrastructure is failing to accommodate the volume of vehicles, leading to excessive build-up and gridlock that extends to the motorway exit and the surrounding roads. This not only impacts those trying to use the services but also those commuting through the area, exacerbating frustration and diminishing the quality of life.

According to recent traffic studies, the area sees an average increase in travel time of up to 30 minutes during peak hours, a statistic that is unacceptable for residents and travelers. A solution to this problem is long overdue.

We propose a thorough review and redesign of the access routes to Exeter motorway services. Implementing strategies such as expanded entry and exit lanes, improved signage, and advanced traffic light systems can significantly alleviate the current congestion. These measures have proven effective in similar situations elsewhere, offering a roadmap to mitigate the persistent problems, for Exeter it would be ideally a designated entry point for northbound traffic as a minimum requirement.

Those who use Sowton Industrial Estate, IKEA, Westpoint are also contributing to the volume of traffic, on top of our very welcomed visitors from the rest of the UK and Europe, in the summertime.

The time has come to prioritise the convenience and safety of Exeter's residents and visitors. By addressing this issue, we can reduce traffic delays, improve the local economy through better accessibility, and ensure a smoother travel experience for everyone.

Support this petition to urge local authorities and relevant transportation bodies to take immediate action. Let's drive positive change for Exeter's community and enhance the traveling experience for all who pass through our city. Please add your signature to make a difference.
