Build cycle tracks in Wandsworth Town Centre

The Issue

[text formatting has been removed - scroll down for letter, which may be easier to read] We demand safe, protected cycle tracks provision for Wandsworth Town to be included in TfL's plans for the removal of the one-way 'gyratory' system. TfL are consulting on their current proposals until 17 January 2016. Every similar major junction scheme (such as those listed below) includes cycle tracks/lanes, except Wandsworth's! Many vulnerable road users will not cycle amongst heavy vehicles like buses and lorries or in heavy / fast motor traffic. Many of us want to cycle more, but can't because there is so little safe and convenient cycle infrastructure in Wandsworth. More people cycling instead of driving or using public transport benefits everyone in many ways (lower air pollution and congestion in particular). TfL's 'Wandsworth cycle network' will have hardly any new painted cycle lanes and zero new protected cycle tracks. We don't believe redirecting some motor traffic and some blue paint without cycle tracks is good enough - the roads in the area will remain hostile for cycling and in some parts, will be worse. The roads in the area are as wide (most are wider) than in schemes where cycle tracks are being built and carry similar levels of traffic. We reject suggestions that roads with four or more traffic lanes don't have space for cycle tracks. We fear that unless cycle tracks are added to these plans, the roads will have to be altered again at a later date, causing much unnecessary waste and disruption. We demand at least a similar level of cycling provision as in other TfL/borough schemes like: Old Street Roundabout Aldgate gyratory Stockwell Cross Oval Triangle Archway Vauxhall Cross Westminster Bridge South Elephant & Castle Many older schemes, such as Kings Cross, Colliers Wood and Waterloo Roundabout included (mostly) painted cycle lanes. The petitioners agree they are better than nothing, but are calling for protected cycle tracks, segregated from motor traffic with kerbs, wands and planters (but not things that can be driven over easily, like 'armadillos'). We demand cycle tracks for all the main roads in Wandsworth Town centre to truly transform it and benefit everyone who lives, works, visits in (or travels through) this borough, however they choose or need to travel.
