Join Bike for Burke: Help Us Create a Continuous and Safe Cycling Journey on Burke Road!

As Monash University students, we urge the City of Stonnington to prioritise sustainable transportation by enhancing bike infrastructure in our area. Our community needs a comfortable and secure cycling environment, and we believe that implementing a protected bike lane on Burke Road is a crucial step toward achieving this goal. Together, we can create a more bike-friendly community that encourages healthier, more sustainable transportation options.

Why is this issue important?

Our recent survey discovered that residents of Stonnington are dissatisfied with existing bike facilities and do not feel confident enough to cycle on local streets. The vast majority of respondents confirmed cycling quite rarely on Burke Road, indicating a great opportunity for the Council to promote cycling within the community.

Key Survey Findings:

1. Infrastructure Dissatisfaction: The majority of residents feel unsafe cycling on existing paths.

2. Traffic Concerns: Congestion is a serious issue for commuters, and a dedicated bike lane on Burke Road is considered a solution.

3. Potential for Cycling Uptake: Residents are eager for a new bike lane as it will encourage more cycling and contribute to better health and well-being.

4. Funding Support: A significant number of poll respondents support funding street improvements such as extra bike lanes, protected/separate lanes, improved management of current routes, and safer road crossings.

We suggest the City of Stonnington Council to take the following actions:

• Establish a Seamless and Accessible Bike Track: Construct a protected bike lane along Burke Road to improve the cycling experience for residents and casual commuters.
• Implement Safety Measures: Ensure the new bike lane has road signs, safe street crossings, and regular maintenance.
• Engage the Community: Enhance community engagement initiatives to actively involve residents in the planning process, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs and preferences are prioritised.
