As I wrote today's update, wifi was suddenly cut. After using the generosity of other's hot spots I am able to find out that the rest of campus is running as normal. Calvert, the building where we are, is the only building without wifi and IT does not know why. Now, I am able to finally deliver the update of these chaotic past twenty four hours.
Last night after the support of one important staff member I will not name for their safety, we received crucial evidence of how in 2014 the administration has received almost identical demands from the Lgbtq+ community. It is scary close to what we have demanded.
At the board of trustees catering dinner on the water, Liz and I brought each person at the dinner a packet containing the 2014 demands, our 2021 original demands, our updated demands, and a letter written by myself for the full story. I would upload the full letter but I'm worried what I've written would disappear due to the cut wifi to our building.
I have to question how the board of trustees felt when receiving this information. I wondered if they were even aware of the sit in happening less then 200 feet away.
This afternoon I heard back from one of the members of the Board of trustees, Danielle Troyan. She wanted to particularly speak with me alone after insisting I didn't record the conversation (twice). I believe she was right that we have made progress and this sit in would not be the end of the conversation. That there was a narrative being constructed and our victory speech may need to be drafted.
I believe a victory speech as she insisted would be premature. We are going to sit and wait for our demands. If we left now, we would never see the change necessary for the transgender community. We would never have a proper lead for diversity on campus. Open housing would continue to falter. And we would never hear an apology.
I have to ask- when it comes to an apology, why is this so difficult? For the name policy, we not only have to wait another year, but on top of the seven we have already waited. We are fine with this- as long as we receive an apology directly from SMCM President Tuajuanda Jordan.
