Trans rights are human rights
The Issue
Rishi Sunak has stated that he wants to change the Equality Act 2010 to "make it clear that sex means biological sex rather than gender". If this reform goes through, it will be detrimental to the progress we have made with trans rights over the last few years.
It means that trans people will not have access to gendered safe spaces such as homeless shelters, they will not be legally protected from using their preferred bathrooms, they will have no protections from discrimination at work meaning that no job will be considered stable as they could legally be fired at any time just for being who they are, unless the job has specific policies in place. This could also escalate into hospitals and the wider healthcare system, with doctors and nurses being able to refuse life-saving treatment just because they don't agree with the patient's gender identity, as the use of private and public services are also included in these protections.
The Equality Act 2010 also protected people who were renting properties from being evicted for being who they are, meaning that this reform could potentially render trans people homeless.
Trans people are already twice as likely to experience crime in the UK as cis-gender people, even with the current protection of the government from discrimination in the workplace and wider society. The mental health of the trans population is lower than any other group, with 40% of trans people having attempted suicide compared to only 5% of cis people. Let's not let the government make these statistics even more severe by making the UK an unsafe place to live for transfolk.
