Hi Awesome Folks,
Well, it has been about a month since Toy Fair NYC ended. About a month since the TIA said they would look at removing gender based toy awards. So, has there been definitive change? No, but we are more and more optimistic that things are moving in the right direction.
First off, more and more people are coming out and speaking up about the need to remove gender stereotypes in toys. Attached to this update is a radio interview I did on the topic.
We are clearly seeing more media interest in this story and more calls for the Toy Industry Association to take action.
Speaking of the TIA, I continue to email them and ask when we might start to see real change in the TOTY Awards. I asked when they start picking categories for the TOTY 2017 Awards and also asked that they keep me informed.
Surprisingly, I did get a perfectly appropriate response from their Director of Strategic Communications saying "We will definitely keep you posted. It’s a new year and new committees are being formed. I’m not sure exactly when the category discussion will occur but we promise to keep you updated on any changes."
I consider this a positive development as well because our intention was never to have an adversarial relationship with TIA. It is not us vs them. We ALL have children and we ALL need to work together to make positive change when it comes to gender stereotypes and toys.
We look forward to having an open dialogue with the TIA and making sure that change is not just discussed but actually implemented...this year!
To that matter, the more names we have on the petition, the more seriously the TIA will take our concerns. So, if you could ask friends to sign the petition, well, that would be just swell.
Have a great weekend and thanks so much for your support,
Dan
