Hi All, It has been a very busy past few days. On Friday the Washington Post article perfectly documented the issues with gender based toy awards. On Friday night, the Toy Of The Year Awards Ceremony was held. Shopkins Ice Cream Truck won Girl Toy of The Year while Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon won for Boy Toy of The Year. Once again, gender stereotypes win big at the TOTY Awards! However, then something wonderful happened. The CEO of the Toy Industry Association (TIA), Steve Pasierb, said this on stage during the ceremony... "For TOTY, that means taking a fresh look at our awards process, engaging even more people from the industry to serve on nominations committees, making certain the process is transparent, and both refreshing and expanding our categories to reflect the incredible innovation of the toy industry. That will also mean reassessing the boys toy and girls toy categories." YES and IT'S ABOUT TIME. We also had the Director of Strategic Communications for TIA, Adrienne Appel, saying this in the Washington Post article in regard to the Boy/Girl TOTY Awards - "Right now we are reviewing. We are cognizant of the fact that the world is changing and we are looking to retire these categories." So, is our work done? Absolutely not, but I do think things are moving in a positive direction. The CEO of the TIA, making a very public statement about reassessing boy and girl toy awards, DURING their award ceremony, is a major step forward. Still, we must hold them to their words. It is time for action and we will keep pushing to make sure that we have seen the last Boy and Girl TOTY Awards. Thanks as always for your support. Over the course of a few days we went from "obviously we don't touch this" to the CEO saying on a public stage "That will also mean reassessing the boys toy and girls toy categories." Our work is not done, but we feel more confident than ever that the Boy and Girl TOTY Awards will soon be history.
