Council continues to focus on finances ahead of the community

The Town of Walkerville council meeting is being presented with misleading information at tomorrow nights meeting as part of a recommendation to not propose to offer a renewal or extension of the existing lease for the Walkerville Y, placing at risk the continuation of community recreation activities utilised by over 1,000 people per week. A recommendation prepared by council administration makes incorrect references to concrete cancer which are not supported by the building consultants report and contradict reports of a structurally sound building in need of some refurbishments and modernisation. This would appear to be an embellishment of information to support recommendations designed to maximise the financial returns to council from the site at the expense of community programs that promote wellbeing, physical activity and social connectedness.

YMCA Inner North East Adelaide continues to utilise its own resources to maintain the facility for recreation programs in the absence of any budgeted maintenance and capital works expenditure by the asset owner, the Town of Walkerville. A working bee is planned for Sunday 15th March to carry our further site maintenance and supporters are welcome to attend at 39 Smith St Walkerville and assist in any way they can.

The council meeting is open to the public and supporters and general public are encouraged to attend the meeting at 7pm Monday 17th February at Walkerville Council chambers, 66 Walkerville Terrace Gilberton.
