Current status of the Town/ CSP settlement
About 200-250 people (by our estimates) showed up at the last Schoharie Town Board meeting. About thirty people spoke against settling with CSP and urged the town board to continue defending the Land Use Law (one person spoke in favor of it).
We delivered a petition with 580 (now up to 602) names on it, along with 19 pages of comments from the petition. A large number of letters were sent to the board. The board did NOT vote on the motion for the settlement.
The board has not said anything about what the next step will be, other than that they will consider the comments they’ve received. We would strongly recommend concerned citizens be at the May 11th board meeting to hear what the board has to say.
We were previously told that written comments were due to the Schoharie town board April 6th. However, considering that the board has not indicated what it is doing, if you haven’t signed the petition and added a comment at https://www.change.org/p/town-of-schoharie-town-board-save-schoharie-stop-quarry-expansion-before-it-s-too-late do so now. You can also send a separate comment to the board at schoharietownclerk@midtel.net. Any additional input to the board will help.
We also note that the NYS DEC Region 4 is currently reviewing CSP’s permit application for the existing mine (the last permit expired in 2010). SOS has submitted comments on that process to DEC, and will try to keep the community involved.
Also NYS DEC Central Office is reviewing the status of the proposed expansion. SOS and the Village (along with their technical experts and legal teams) will be at a technical meeting on CSP noise issues to be held at DEC in June.
