Friends of Clifton Park Open Space started this petition to Town of Clifton Park Town Board

Friends of Clifton Park Open Space is joining other public voices in urging the Town of Clifton Park to consider acquiring the Stony Creek Reservoir and keep it in public hands.

The Stony Creek Reservoir—located between Grooms and Crescent Roads, east of Vischer Ferry Road—is nearly 1000 acres of forested, undeveloped land and almost 365 acres of fresh water.  The reservoir and adjoining land are pristine—having been essentially untouched for seven decades.  It is the largest natural, undeveloped area in town.  Continued public ownership can avoid further urban sprawl in the dense eastern half of Clifton Park.

·        The Stony Creek Reservoir provides wonderful ecological benefits as protective wetlands, flood barriers, fresh air and forest reserves, important habitat for fish and fowl as well as extended grounds for breeding and migratory birds.  Its proximity to the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve only expands its value as a complement to that highly popular Clifton Park get-away.

·        The Stony Creek Reservoir has potential to provide a wide variety of public open space uses including hiking, passive recreation and non-motorized use of the waterways and extension of the existing trails systems.

·        The Stony Creek Reservoir also has the potential for other agricultural, historical and tourism opportunities for the Town of Clifton Park and increased property values throughout the town.

If you agree with these points, then please consider signing your name to the petition statement below, and take the time to forward this information to your friends and family that could also be interested in supporting this Town initiative:

“Because the Stony Creek Reservoir is centrally located in our town and has been literally untouched by development for 70 years, it is a unique regional ecological resource ideally suited for public preservation by the Town of Clifton Park.  The acquisition of the Stony Creek Reservoir will preserve nearly 1,000 acres of pristine woodlands and watershed in Southern Saratoga County and help maintain and enhance the quality of life, the environment, sustainability, and economic competitiveness of the town and the surrounding areas.   Therefore, we support a process for the Town of Clifton Park to work with the Open Space Institute toward the acquisition of the Stony Creek Reservoir from the Town of Colonie.“
