The Issue

I am Krish Attaluri, a high school junior from Cary, NC

Last year during the holidays I conducted an independent research on recycle management at Town of Cary. My research paper can be found here Revisiting Recycle Management Post COVID at Town of Cary

Town of Cary is the heart of Research Triangle Park. Currently around 200,000 residents call Cary, NC home.

The Town of Cary previously had weekly recycle-bin collection but discontinued it in 2009. It's time for Town of Cary to reinstate the weekly recycle bin pick up.

Online shopping has increased significantly since 2009 and has grown exponentially since the COVID pandemic. With many residents working from home the consumption patterns have changed. These factors have led to increase in recyclable material produced by residents.

My research via a survey in the zip code 27519 indicated these

. Over 75% of respondents agreed that their shopping behavior has changed since COVID.

. Majority of respondents agreed they have more recyclable material because of this new shopping behavior.

. Around half of the respondents agreed that they possibly put recyclable material in trash bins for of lack of space in their recycle bin.

. Many residents make trips to Wake Recycle Centers to drop off recyclables.

. Town of Apex, Town of Morrisville and all urban towns of Orange County have switched to weekly recycle bin pick up.

. The waste collection/management cost for each resident at Town of Apex is around $23 and the cost of waste collection/management for each resident at Town of Cary (without weekly recycle collection) is $22
