EEWG PETITION TO TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL OBJECTING TO ST WILLIAM HOMES’ PLANNING APPLICATION FOR THE REDEVELOPMENT OF THE MARIAN PLACE GASHOLDER SITE AND DEMANDING THE IN SITU CONSERVATION AND BEST POSSIBLE ‘REUSE’ OF THE HISTORIC BETHNAL GREEN GASHOLDERS

  • THE No.2 COLUMNAR GUIDE FRAME (1865-66) IS THE OLDEST SURVIVING GASHOLDER GUIDE FRAME IN THE WORLD
  • THE No.5 LATTICE GUIDE FRAME (1888-89) IS ONE OF THE FEW SURVIVING EXAMPLES BUILT BY THE WORLD-RENOWNED LOCAL FIRM OF SAMUEL CUTLER & SONS OF MILLWALL (ISLE OF DOGS)
  • THEY ARE THE ONLY SURVIVING ADJACENT GASHOLDER GUIDE FRAMES IN LONDON WHICH REPRESENTS THE TWO MAIN TYPES OF HISTORIC GASHOLDER GUIDE FRAME, AND THE ONLY SURVIVING IN SITU GASHOLDER GUIDE FRAMES ON THE REGENT’S CANAL
  • ST WILLIAM HOMES’ FORTHCOMING PLANNING APPLICATION FOR BLOCKS OF FLATS INSIDE BOTH GUIDE FRAMES WOULD ‘RETAIN’ THE ORIGINAL GUIDE FRAMES BY DISMANTLING THEM FOR OFF SITE CONSERVATION AT AN ENGINEERING WORKS AND RE-ERECTION AROUND THE NEWLY BUILT BLOCK OF FLATS (PROBABLY ON THEIR ORIGINAL IN-GROUND TANKS). THIS WOULD:

̶  BE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN IN SITU CONSERVATION FROM SCAFFOLDING

̶  RISK DAMAGE (ESPECIALLY THE No.2’s BRITTLE CAST-IRON COLUMNS AND PEDESTALS)

̶  REQUIRE NEW CONNECTIONS AND REINFORCEMENTS

̶  RESULT IN SERIOUS AND UNNECESSARY LOSS OF AUTHENTICITY

We, the undersigned, object to the proposed block of flats inside the re-erected No.2 columnar guide frame and want the guide frame conserved in situ (on its original in-ground brick tank) with a circular grassed public open space inside so that:

• the world’s oldest surviving gasholder guide frame is fully appreciated in its canalside location

• the circular open space admits sunlight to what would otherwise be a very shaded part of the canalside and the canal

• the circular open space links the proposed central public open space with the open space of the canalside and the canal.

We, the undersigned, also want the No.5 lattice guide frame conserved in situ (on its original in-ground concrete tank) and St William Homes proposed block of flats built inside the in situ conserved guide frame, like the block of flats built inside the Alliance gasholder guide frame at Dublin, which was conserved in situ from scaffolding.
