Dear Supporters,
At the time of writing we need just 53 more signatures to reach the very grand total of 2,500 names - so do please keep spreading the word!
In my last update I promised some exciting news. Here it is.
Tower Hamlets Council Planning Department have issued an Enforcement Notice in respect of 81 Mile End Road which means the owners (Resolution Properties) must make immediate repairs to the old Spiegelhalter facade, not allowing it to fall into further dereliction.
This is great news - but the future of the facade is not yet secure so the battle is far from over. This campaign was set up with one very modest aim - to urge Tower Hamlets Council to impose 'local listing' on the Spiegelhalter building. This was prompted by news that Resolution properties, and their architects, had plans to demolish the structure and create a glass void, with oxidised Cor-ten steel 'shards' as an entrance to their office development behind the Wickham facade - an idea so crass and thoughtless that the campaign was set up within a few minutes of hearing about it. We still haven't obtained listing (and there's still a long way to go). But the issue is on the Planning Department's radar, and the developers know what the public feeling is about their proposal.
This week I shall be downloading all your names and comments and delivering our petition to Tower Hamlets Council Planning Department (and will let you know how that goes). The campaign, I repeat, is not over - although until Resolution Properties make a move we are in no position to protest further. I hope they have already considered the damage to their reputation if they go ahead with the destruction of Spiegelhalters, and the media interest that would follow such a move.
Speaking of which, the amount of media interest has astonished me. We've had extensive coverage in the national and international press, in print and online; we've been featured on BBC radio (twice) and BBC TV prime time news.
But the biggest surprise has been the number of supporters who have signed this petition and left many wonderful comments. I've read them all and been very moved. Thank you.
We haven't won the battle and the war rages on. A short distance from Spiegelhalter's lies Norton Folgate - a fascinating and richly historical quarter of Victorian warehouses and cobbled streets. British Land want to demolish 70% of the district and - you'll never guess - put up corporate glass blocks and luxury flats.
You can find out more about this campaign here: http://spitalfieldslife.com/2015/02/08/save-norton-folgate/
In its small way Spiegelhalter's stands for everything the Norton Folgate campaign is fighting to protect and preserve - texture, continuity, charm, wit and history on a human scale. This is yet another David and Goliath battle, one that Spiegelhalter's has been winning since the 1920 - an example for us all.
Keep spreading the word!
All good wishes
David
