Dear Supporters,
Thanks to all of you who turned up today to show your your support - it was much appreciated. And thanks to all those of you we spoke to today who said they agree with our campaign - mostly local residents with fond memories of the old shop, but also a couple from Hungary who were fascinated by the building's history and took lots of pictures. By 1:45 we'd run out of leaflets and posters and had to call it a day.
We have one more Saturday leafletting campaign lined up for next weekend, and hope to see you there. More news of that during the week, by which time I hope we'll have more than 2,000 signatures (which means or petition will be taken seriously by Tower Hamlets Council). My original plan was to campaign for one month from 5th January and take it from there, but interest in the petition continues to grow so we may extend into February.
Do look out for a piece about Spiegelhalter's by Rowan Moore (UK Press Awards Critic of the Year 2014) in tomorrow\s Observer. Not sure whether this will appear online but if so I'll post a link.
Finally a correction to yesterday's update: it's the Georgian GROUP (not Georgian Society). The jury is still out on the date of 81 Mile End Road. Any experts out there care to comment? Is it pre-1830?
Have a good weekend, and keep spreading the word - we need more names!
David
