The campaign is powering ahead - we're on our way to 1,000 signatures. Sincere thanks to all of you for your support, and extra thanks to those of you who have posted comments, which will all be included in the petition to Tower Hamlets Council. Please keep them coming.
Here's something for the weekend: Spitalfields Life is a superb blog by "the gentle author" about our campaign and the history of the Spiegelhalter site: http://spitalfieldslife.com/2015/01/09/save-spiegelhalters/
There are some sharp and unsettling images of the proposed glass 'void' that are pert of current proposals for the site. This must not happen!
The name 'Spiegelhalter' literally means 'mirror holder' (although whether this refers to an object or a servant employed in a particularly lowly capacity is anyone's guess). It seems appropriate that this little building holds a mirror up to the history of the east End - the Great War, the Depression, the Blitz, post-war austerity and (the biggest threat of all) the current wave of gentrification.
Spread the word!
David
