We've won. You'll need to register online to read this piece by Elizabeth Hopkirk, but it's worth doing so (not least to enjoy other updates from this excellent site).

All my thinks are thanks (to quote Auden). Sincere thanks to every one of you who supported this campaign - to those of you who posted inspiring and often very moving comments; to all those organisations who backed the campaign (you know who you are); to those of you who turned up in the Mile End Road on blustery Saturdays to spread the word (I know who you are); to the many members of the Spiegelhalter family around the world who added their contrarian voices (we all know who you are!) and to everyone who gave time and effort and resources and added their voices and energy and good faith. Thanks also to the many friends in the media who reported the campaign - newspapers and telly and online sites. The preservation of a plucky symbolic facade is small beer, perhaps, in the context of the momentous battle going on to prevent British Land ruining Norton Folgate but I hope our modest victory will be a rallying point and a symbol of popular opposition to thoughtless and inappropriate developments in the future. The spirit of the Spiegelhalter family lives on! Thank you, thank you, thank you all.
And final thanks to the architects BuckleyGreyYeoman and the developers for listening to us and doing the right thing. Good work fellas! If anyone at the practice cares to contact me I'll be happy to send a complimentary copy of Nairn's London - required reading for anyone who claims a stake in the future of London. Read this - you'll be better architects if you do.
Keep spreading the word, my friends!
David
