The Issue

I am Sparkle Young, a recent survivor of domestic violence, and my experience has opened my eyes to the harsh reality many victims face here in Michigan. The scars may heal with time, but the trauma is a lingering shadow that many of us have to deal with every day. What I'm particularly outraged by, however, is how the state treats perpetrators of domestic violence—like it's a minor infraction, a mere slap on the wrist.

Domestic violence is deemed a minor crime in Michigan, a shocking fact given the pandemic levels of this issue. Every day, countless victims are harmed, battered, and even fatally injured, while the legal system fails to offer adequate protection by minimizing the crime's seriousness. Michigan considers domestic violence too lightly and fails to punish those responsible with suitable severity. This isn't just my story; it's the tragic reality for thousands.

Studies show that states with tougher domestic violence laws have lower rates of recurrence. For instance, in states where domestic violence is considered a felony, incidents have significantly decreased by up to 11% (Bureau of Justice Statistics). It's time for Michigan to take a stand and match these efforts by upgrading domestic violence to a felony and ensuring that abusers face meaningful consequences for their actions.

To make this change a reality, we propose the following actionable steps:

1. **Reclassify Domestic Violence:** Revise the existing laws to classify domestic violence as a felony in Michigan, thereby recognizing the severe impact it has on victims' lives.

2. **Mandatory Sentencing:** Establish mandatory minimum sentencing for first-time and repeat offenders, as research highlights that consistent sentencing reduces repeat offenses. Also mandatory counseling and educational programs provided for perpetrators.

3. **Enhanced Victim Support:** Increase funding and access to programs that support victims in escaping abusive situations, providing them not only safety but also a real opportunity to rebuild their lives.

4. **Community Education:** Invest in public education campaigns surrounding domestic violence in order to destigmatize victims, to increase awareness of resources and legal rights.

By implementing these steps, Michigan can spearhead the fight against domestic violence, holding perpetrators accountable and saving lives.

Please join me in calling for change. Let's ensure that no other domestic violence survivor feels betrayed by a system designed to protect them. Sign this petition and demand that Michigan's legislature act now to enforce stronger laws against domestic violence.
