Only a few short days after submitting this petition to Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders in support of Parking Enforcement Officer Kyle Ashley and the city's bike lane ticketing "blitz," we received the following response from Brian Moniz, A/Officer-in-Charge -- Parking Enforcement Operations (@TPS_Brian): "We are in receipt of your Change.Org petition and correspondence that you forwarded to the Office of the Chief of Police. "Thank you kindly for the awareness and recognition that you have generated for Parking Enforcement Officer Kyle Ashley of the Parking Enforcement West Unit, and the good work that he has accomplished. Kyle will continue to be assigned to enforce bicycle lanes, and in the next few weeks, we will be adding additional resources to bicycle lane enforcement." The petition was closed after PEO Ashley confirmed during a CBC radio interview that he had been permanently assigned to a full time bike lane ticketing beat in the downtown core. The petition, which was delivered electronically to Chief Saunders on July 14, was initiated on July 3, 2017 to support PEO Ashley and to prevent the city's "bike lane blitz" ticketing program from coming to its predetermined end on July 7, 2017. PEO Ashley's efforts highlighted the vast number of vehicles, including belligerent corporate bullies who park confidently in bike lanes, often insulting cyclists who ask them to move. Due to PEO Ashley's efforts tweeting images from his @TPS_ParkingPal Twitter account and reaching out to offenders who put cyclists at risk, bike riders have noticed fewer vehicles parked in bike lanes. Cyclists who send a tweet to PEO Ashley to report a vehicle in the bike lane, typically receive an empathetic response and the driver often receives a ticket. Since the blitz ended last week and rolled over into a regular shift for PEO Ashley, the bike lanes have become less of a battleground, but concerns remain over infrastructure and cycling safety.
