Governor Evers: Suspend Mortgage, Rent, and Utility Payments during COVID-19 Pandemic

As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, most families who follow Federal CDC and Wisconsin Department of Health Service's guidelines to stay at home are struggling to stay financially secure due to lost income. Nobody should be kicked out of their home during this health crisis because they are unable to pay their rent, mortgage, or utility bills due to lost income.

Affording low- and middle- income residents the economic freedom to follow public health guidelines is critical to the survival of thousands of Wisconsin families, and to the health of our entire population. Governor Evers should immediately issue an emergency order declaring that no person will be required to make their mortgage, rent, or utility bill payments until the current public health emergency is over, that no one may be evicted for failure to pay rent, that banks may not start foreclosure proceedings for failure to make mortgage payments, and that utility providers may not cut off service for failure to pay current bills.

We cannot force working families to choose between their own health and their families' food or housing security any longer.
