Thank you everyone for sharing and caring. This is the latest media release from Save the Dingoes Inc. Save Fraser Island Dingoes Inc. 50 Old Maryborough Rd. Pialba Qld. 4655 Ph: (07) 4124 1979 Email: mkrail@bigpond.net.au ABN: 15369 628 753 INC:1A37577 CP 53 Media Statement. Minister dismisses need for a Wildlife Care Centre on Fraser Island. 13 Jan 2015 The Hon. Steve Dickson, Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing, stated there was no evidence to suggest that a care and rehabilitation facility for sick and injured wildlife was necessary or warranted on Fraser Island. This is despite the fact there is ample evidence to the contrary. Records indicate many injured or sick animals have been removed from the Island for treatment, the majority die in transit. The Minister further asserted that the Care Centre was legislatively impossible as it contravened the 'cardinal principle' of the (Nature Conservation Act 1992.) This is clearly not the case as the cardinal principle states a National Park is 'managed for the permanent preservation of the area’s natural condition and the protection of its cultural resources and values', assisting wildlife that, at many times, is the direct result of human intervention, does not contravene this principle. According to Mr. Dickson 'any injuries or orphaned animals tend to result from natural causes and should not be interfered with.' This is inconsistent with every National Park in Australia where injured animals are humanely cared for, regardless if the injuries are caused by natural events or human interference. Mr. Dickson cited the fact that only 3 dingoes required treatment in the past 5 years, this figure is not accurate and most die before assistance can be provided. RTI (Right to Information) records indicate many animals are impacted by vehicle strike, visitors trying to take selfies and discarded human refuse, not to mention the sheer volume of tourists during peak holiday periods, to claim that the wildlife 'has limited exposure to human interference' must be refuted. A recent amendment to the Nature Conservation Act provides for a substantial increase in recreational and commercial activities in National Parks, this has placed even more pressure on the wildlife. The Minster for Environment and Heritage Protection, the Hon. Andrew Powell, advised, 'I am supportive of further investigation of the option of a care facility...individual animal welfare concerns are of upmost importance. ' This statement is contrary to the policy adopted by Qld National Parks. Dr Howard Ralph, GP. BVSc and wildlife specialist was dismayed to hear of the apparent lack of concern for wildlife as express by Mr. Dickson and his staff. Dr Ralph stated 'as a World Heritage Listed Island, the world would be watching and that not to offer assistance to injured wildlife was against humane practices'. The local Community, Wildlife Organisations, veterinarians and Sanctuaries have endorsed the proposal of a Care Facility, many offering assistance and professional support. World Heritage Magnetic Island operate a Wildlife Care Station and National Parks across Australia treat injured fauna, it is not unreasonable to expect the same duty of care to exist on Fraser Island.
