Our commitment to "hometown sports" at the Great Falls Tribune never wavers.

Because there are a lot of places that consider us their hometown publication, we've got a lot of ground to cover. And a lot of heroes who deserve one last hurrah.

The year 2014 was one of exceptional achievement for hometown sports teams and individuals, and today we're looking back at what we considered the top 15 stories of the year.

We're also reprinting small snippets of the stories as reported by the Tribune. So as one year ends and another begins, we congratulate the headline-makers of 2014 and look forward to heralding those of 2015.

1. Josh Huestis drafted by Thunder

C.M. Russell High graduate and former Stanford star Josh Huestis was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the NBA Draft Thursday night (June 26).

Huestis, a 6-8, 225-pounder who led the CMR Rustlers to back-to-back Class AA basketball championships and had a solid career for the Stanford Cardinal, was picked with the 29th overall selection.

"It's the best thing in my life," Huestis said at the Sting Sports Bar, which had a draft party. The place was full of Huestis fans, who celebrated with their hometown hero.
