TOBACCO COMPANIES, STOP TOBACCO ADS AROUND SCHOOL !

Our school is attacked! It is not by the armies.

We are attacked by tobacco companies with their murderous advertisements !

Billboard and tobacco banners stand firmly along on the way to school. Posters and stickers which contain tobacco commercials are put on the school walls and gateways. Look at our surroundings! It is to-be-sure that our school has been dominated by sophisticated marketing campaigns looking for youth.

We, as children, have the right to get a good environment with proper information and not an environment that fulls of the misleading ones that will bring diseases and harms. Unfortunately, those inapproprate phenomena can be found within the neighborhood school.

Our schools are conquered.

Based on a survey from 5 different cities in Indonesia, 85% of schools are surrounded by tobacco advertisements. If we go to school everyday for 12 years, we can assume more than 3000 times our eyes not blinking yet seeing the advertisements over and over again.

As a result, we come into a conclusion that tobacco is a common thing in society. Smoking in public area becomes a normal sight to be seen, even though we all know that a ciggerette contains of 7000 dangerous chemicals. It is widely known that those chemicals lead into addiction, multiple severe diseases, even death.

Furthermore, tobacco industries  keep deceiving people, especially children, with their sly tactics. Tobacco industries set a very low price for their deadly products which are so affordable to be bought by students. A ciggerette is determined for only Rp. 1000,00 or $ 0.08. It is even cheaper than a hand that fulls of candies. Tobacco industries are actively capturing data about their young targets, or us, as the key market. They sustain the industry by recruiting new smokers whom are under the age of 18. In case, it is not surprising that Global Youth Tobacco Survey 2014 in Indonesia showed about 2 out of 5 students being an active smoker and 3 out of 5 buying the ciggerette from a stall.

For you my friends, the emergency sound has been declared. We can not just stand still and do nothing. There are 90 schools from Padang, Mataram, Bekasi, Tanggerang Selatan, and Bogor Regency who  have taken the first step to fight and resist the tobacco industries. Come and join us!

You can help us to voice this together by : 

1. Insisting and demanding the tobacco companies to stop targetting children and putting tobacco ads around the schools.

2. Asking the government protection for children by banning all of the tobacco ads in Indonesia.
