I as a concerned parent, deeply moved by the harsh injustices faced by young doctors in our state of West Bengal. My heart shakes with worry for these young professionals who have become victims of a threat culture in the government health system, protected by the state government. The recent incidents of rape and murder at the RG Kar hospital further highlight the grave discrepancies in our health system that demand immediate attention. It is disheartening to see our bright, young doctors driven to go on a mass ‘fast until death’. They are crying out for help and justice, and as a society, we cannot afford to turn a deaf ear to their pleas.

Our health professionals, the ones defending us at the forefront of the COVID pandemic, they are left to fend for themselves. We should protect those who have committed their lives to protect us. We have to help them switch from ‘fast until death’ to ‘serve until death’.

I strongly urge the head of the state to reevaluate the protection measures in place for our healthcare professionals and carry out a thorough investigation into the charges of rape and murder at RG Kar hospital. The current status quo fosters fear, not safety. Silence in the face of these horrific incidents equates to complicity. We must ensure the safety of our doctors, who risk their lives every day to save ours.
