In 1976 and 1977, five black Buffalo (NY) teenagers were arrested and indicted, three of these were tried and convicted, for the murder of an elderly man named William Crawford. The 5 teenagers, were: John Walker, Jr., Darryl Boyd, Darren Gibson, Floyd Martin, and Tyrone Woodruff. Mr. Crawford was a Caucasian gentleman who resided in the Fillmore-Kensington Neighborhood of the City Of Buffalo, as did some of the youth. At the time of his murder, Mr. Crawford was also robbed of the funds from his VA Pension Check. The five youth, now known as The Buffalo 5, were truly not guilty of the crime, but material evidence that would have proven their innocence was withheld by the Buffalo Police Department and/or by the Erie County District's Attorney's Office. In fact, the trials contained numerous Brady Violations. A Brady Violation occurs when exculpatory or impeaching information and evidence that is material to the guilt or innocence or to the punishment of a defendant, is withheld from that defendant. The Supreme Court Of The United States Of America ruled that suppression, by the prosecution, of evidence favorable to a defendant who has requested it, violates due process. This petition was created during 2020, to illustrate public support for exoneration of The Buffalo 5, and we are happy to report that the Matter of The Buffalo 5's (Erie County) Indictment No. 41-413 was reopened in Fall of that same year. Two of The Buffalo 5's convictions, those of John Henry Walker, Jr. and Darryl Boyd, are now being revisited in a New York State Supreme courtroom. The Honorable Christopher J. Burns is the presiding judge. A thorough and complete exoneration now has genuine opportunity to occur.
