Labour Against the Witch-hunt
Dec 1, 2017
We have nearly 1,500 signatures. Tony Greenstein is shortly due to face Labour's National Kangaroo Court (NCC!). Below I print an excellent emailed letter to the NCC's Secretary one Jane Shaw jane_shaw@labour.org.uk. You also might want to write something to her and the organ grinder, one Iain McNicol iain_mcnicol@labour.org.uk. A crowdfunding appeal has also been launched to fund both an application to the High Court for an Injunction, which has now been listed for this Thursday and to sue the far-Right fake charity 'Campaign Against Anti-Semitism' for libel. Please donate whatever you can afford. This is all our battle. These people are using this bogus 'anti-semitism' in order to destroy the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn Crowdfunding Appeal - Help fund legal action against Iain McNicol and the Campaign Against Antisemitism https://www.change.org/p/to-the-national-executive-committee-stop-the-witch-hunt-of-socialists-in-the-labour-party Dear Ms Shaw, I have been following the plight of Tony Greenstein for quite a while now and am appalled at the way the Compliance Unit of the Labour Party appears to have completely disregarded the advice of the Chakrabarti Report and it is noted that the Report appears to have been removed from the Labour Party website! Section 5 of that Report calls for "clear and transparent compliance procedures for dealing with allegations" but none of the recommendations in the report appear to have been followed at all, for example the report states: "It is completely unfair, unacceptable and a breach of Data Protection law that anyone should have found out about being the subject to an investigation or their suspension by way of the media and indeed that leaks, briefing or other publicity should so often have accompanied a suspension pending investigation." I note that newspapers, eg The Telegraph on 1 April 2016 included an article about Greenstein in which it was stated: "Evidence compiled by Labour's compliance unit when Mr Greenstein attempted to join the party last summer, seen by The Telegraph..." Clearly indicating a leak from the Compliance Unit. Later the Telegraph was forced by Greenstein to publish a retraction of their intimation that he is anti-semitic on 9 April, and also to publish Greenstein's rebuttal of their allegations in a letter published on 11 April. It is unacceptable that such smears are leaked to the press, obviously with little grounding, given the retraction that followed. I further note this statement in the Report "The Labour Party should seek to uphold the strongest principles of natural justice, however difficult the circumstances, and to resist subjecting members to a trial by media." in order to comment on the 'principles of natural justice', specifically that Greenstein has been suspended from the Labour Party for something like 17 months and, during this time he has not been told who his accusers are, nor the details of their specific allegations. Recently I believe a rather large packet of documents was delivered to him which detailed the complaints against him, compiled during that 17 month period, but his hearing is supposed to be within a few weeks of receiving that documentation! It seems very unfair that the Labour Party, with all the help it can get (from our membership dues) can spend this amount of time putting together a case, but not afford the same period of time for the accused to do adequate research to challenge allegations made. Not to mention that our membership dues probably also pay for expert advice in prosecuting the case, whilst the person defending it has no such right to equivalent legal assistance funded by the Party. This is not natural justice. As you, I'm sure, must be aware, Tony Greenstein, a Jewish member of the Labour Party, has fought anti-racism, including anti-semitism all his life and has built up a wealth of knowledge about the background to the situation in Israel/Palestine, some of which is unpalatable, as history often is. He is always prepared to cite his reports and sources so that readers can check the validity of his statements and I, for one, have not had cause to doubt his integrity and honesty in what he reports. It seems clear to many of us observing what is happening to Greenstein (and other members of the Labour party similarly suspended) that there is something very wrong with the way the Compliance Unit operates. Sincerely, Kathy McCubbing Reading East CLP
