Lyall Watts (on the left of the photo) left our earthly world shortly after midday on the 15th November 2014. Karen Banton and I were privileged to feel Lyall's last pulse as we, and his life partner of 26 years, Gary (on the right of the photo) said our last goodbyes. Lyall was a close friend of Karen and I, he was also a bestie of my late wife Julie. You see, they had one thing in common - they both had the very rare, terminal cancer, 'peritoneal mesothelioma'! Julie lived for 3 years, 1 month and 7 days after diagnosis, Lyall was a long term survivor, he lived with mesothelioma for over 10 years. Lyall's treatment option was to have the 'palliative' chemotherapy that has been the standard for the last 13 years.
I can only wonder, "Where would both Julie and Lyall be now; if the government provided the money to fund trials of drugs with the potential to treat mesothelioma and rare and less common diseases; and it was made simpler for pharmaceuticals companies to apply to place these drugs on the PBS?"
