KEEP DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ALL YEAR LONG

• JUST IN 2022 DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME HELPED FAMILIES AND COMPANIES SAVE 420 MILLIONS kWh OF ENERGY

In order to face the high cost of energy and allow families and companies to save money, the Italian Society of Environment Energy (Sima) and Consumerismo No Profit are asking the European Commission and the European Parliament, as well as the Italian Government to institute the Daylight Saving Time all year long and drop out of the outdated time-change.

“Italian politicians are talking about rationing gas for companies, distance learning on Saturdays for schools and a reduction of heating next autumn, but they’re forgetting that since 2018, the European Parliament approved, with 84% of votes in favor, the abolition of the obligation of the time-change twice a year, letting each country be free to choose their own time-change.

The permanent transition to the Daylight Saving Time will allow us to earn an hour of sunlight and natural heat everyday and also, considering current gas prices, would determine for our country (Italy) a saving of energy consumption of about 1 billion euros in just the first two years”.

We’re asking to adopt the permanent use of Daylight Saving Time in our countries.

The energy saving originated by the adoption of Daylight Saving Time will also allow to cut the climate emissions for an amount of 200.000 tons of CO2 every year, with positive benefits for people’s health, in addition to economic savings thanks to the reduction of combustion of fossils materials for illumination and heat - calculation made by Sima & Consumerismo.

Before the gas price increase, Terna estimated a saving of energy for 420 millions of kWh in the 7 months in which Daylight Saving Time was effective in Italy, with a minor use of electricity in 15 years equal to 10 billions of kWh, for a total saving of 1,8 billions of euros thanks to the Daylight Saving Time.

“That’s why we’re asking the Italian Government and European Institutions to take an immediate decision, which was deferred to National States by the European Parliament, while inviting each country to do the same”.
