A Full-time Fire Service is needed now in North Wicklow. The current fire service in North Wicklow needs to be changed now, before more fatalities occur due to this outdated retained service.  Here are a few key points:

Faster Response Times: Full-time firefighters are on duty at the station, which means they can respond to emergencies quicker than retained firefighters who need to be called in by pager from their homes, through traffic etc

New Housing:  Within the North Wicklow Fire Service catchment area there have been thousands of new housing units, many of these builds include high-rise buildings where the time delay of a retained fire service is putting people at risk and with the massive growth puts a higher demand on the retained service.

Traffic Congestion:  Due to the fire service being paged when they are called they have to travel across North Wicklow in their private vehicles to their station to then prepare and go out on call.

Increased Availability: Full-time firefighters can provide continuous coverage, ensuring that there are always enough personnel available to handle emergencies, even during peak times or multiple incidents.

Enhanced Training and Skills: Full-time firefighters have more opportunities for ongoing training and skill development, which can lead to better preparedness and effectiveness in handling a wide range of emergencies.

Community Engagement: Full-time firefighters engage more with the community through fire safety education, school visits, and other outreach programs, helping to prevent fires and improve overall safety.

Job Security and Benefits: Full-time firefighters receive a stable income, benefits, and job security, which can attract and retain highly skilled and dedicated personnel.

Comprehensive Services: Full-time fire services  offer a wider range of services, including fire prevention, emergency medical response, hazardous material handling, and technical rescues.

 

North Wicklow fire service is retained only as a cost-saving measure and is not putting safety at its forefront. A full-time fire service will provide a higher level of safety and support for the community in North Wicklow and will save lives.
