#TicketToutsOut: Personalised tickets for all high profile music events
The Issue
Not a single Glastonbury ticket has been touted in the last nine years. A system where each ticket is personalised with a photo ID was introduced in 2007, and has prevented any tickets from making their way into the hands of touts since. This is not new technology, ticket outlets are just choosing not to use it.
#TicketToutsOut is calling for all tickets to high profile events to require personalisation, whether that’s in the form of a photo ID, a printed name or something else. The aim is to make sure that the fans coming through the doors of venues across the country purchased their ticket at face value.
We have a very large and growing problem with ticket touts, harvesters and bots in this country, as highlighted by the select committee who met in parliament on Tuesday 15th November. People are buying up a large allocation of the tickets to an event, and instantly re-selling them with prices marked up by as much as thousands of pounds. This current system is unfairly pricing out genuine fans.
Personalised tickets and stringent checks at venues can at least go some way in preventing this industrial scale market abuse. We’ve seen it work successfully in practice at Glastonbury for the last nine years and more recently on the latest Iron Maiden tour. It’s time that everyone followed suit.
