My family and I were victims of lead poisoning from a EPA certified landlord in Buffalo NY, who ultimately was arrested AND he served NO jail time or had any fines, just 200 hours of community service. No one should ever have to live in unsafe conditions... when it IS 100% preventable 

We have laws in place but at the end of the day these landlords are given years to get work done or the dept of health comes in and places a Piece of paper on the door that is easily ripped off that says DO NOT OCCUPY the LANDLORDS don't care. THEY take MY money for rent. YET this is all illegal and looked past. I want stricter laws!!! I want fines!!! I want restitution!!! I want you to not be able to buy property and rent it out after so many offences!!!! I want higher standards for housing!  No one should live in an unsafe rental. I want justice for those who were in the right!!! IT is time for Landlords to be held accountable for there non action!!! That knock on the door on the 1st of the month shouldn't come if your tenant is not safe. If you are certified as many of these landlords are, you should not be allowed to abate your own property!!! There should be a special unit set up WITHIN THE NYS DEPT OF HEALTH who specialize in lead abatement and they should be the ones doing it properly not some Joe off the street who took a couple classes. I want landlords to think about the safety and well being of their tenants not the next rent payment!!
